INTRODUCTION
Quick Answer
A drum reeling cable — also called a crane reel cable — is built for continuous winding/unwinding on crane cable drums, where ordinary flexible cable fails within weeks. Four things make it different:
Built for the reel — Class 5/6 tinned copper stranding, 6 × OD bend radius, up to 120 m/min reeling
Tensile reinforcement — steel wire core + Kevlar, ≥ 3,000 kg breaking load
Anti-torsion — counter-helical lay + braided shield, up to ±150°/m
Custom-engineered — power / power + control / power + control + fiber, 600/1000 V up to 8.7/15 kV, matched to your reel and pinout
When a drum cable fails, the crane stops — downtime measured in thousands of dollars per hour. The right cable is specified, not substituted.

Why Standard Cable Fails on a Reel

Core layout (power/control/fiber) · conductor size · voltage class (to 8.7/15 kV) · tensile rating (1,000–10,000 kg) · jacket material & color · reel length (50–500 m) · meter marking every 1 m · termination
STS/RTG/RMG gantry cranes · overhead steel-mill cranes · tower cranes · grab cranes & ship unloaders · ladle/charging cranes · mining draglines & shovels (MV) · stackers/reclaimers · offshore deck cranes (DNV/ABS)

What is the difference between a drum reeling cable and a standard flexible cable? Drum reeling cables are engineered for continuous winding under tension on reels, with tensile members (steel core + Kevlar), anti-torsion construction and low-friction PUR jackets. Standard flexible cable lacks tensile reinforcement and will stretch, corkscrew and fail within weeks on a reel.
Can you match my existing cable specifications? Yes. Provide core layout, cross-section, outer diameter, voltage class, reel dimensions and operating conditions. Our engineers verify compatibility and recommend improvements.
Do you offer medium voltage (MV) drum reeling cables? Yes — from 3.6/6 kV to 8.7/15 kV with tensile reinforcement, semi-conductive screens and XLPE/EPR insulation, type-tested per IEC 60502-2. MOQ: 300 m.
What is NSHTOU-J and do I need it? The German VDE standard for heavy-duty rubber-sheathed reeling cables, widely specified in European crane projects. Derul supplies both PUR-jacketed cables and NSHTOU-J compliant rubber cables.
What are your MOQ and lead times? MOQ 100 m (300 m for MV). Samples in 5–7 working days; mass production in 15–25 working days.
Send your crane specs, reel dimensions and operating conditions for a free cable configuration — samples ready in 5–7 working days.
